Pupils work on the four communication modes of reading, writing, talking and listening. Whether it's via the BGE English Language programme or SQA courses.

Reading - Pupils study novels, short stories, drama, poetry and media texts for responses and critical evaluations of literature. Also there are close reading examinations where pupils are given and unseen passage for reading and are given questions on it.

Writing - Writing is assessed in two ways; timed writing examinations where pupils are given options of what to write about; and  writing folios are created through continuous assessment as pupils progress through the school.

Talking - Talking is assessed from individual talk and group discussion.

Listening is assessed as a part of talking rather than a separate element.
