What is the Parent Council (or PC)?

The Parent Council is a group of parents selected by members of the Parent Forum to represent all the parents of children at the school.

[Note: the Parent Forum is the collective term for all the parents or carers of children attending Rosshall Academy]

Parent Councils are very flexible groups and the Parent Forum can decide on the type of group it wants to represent its views.  The type of things a Parent Council could get involved in includes:

·         Supporting the work of the school.

·         Gathering and representing parents’ views to the Head Teacher, education authority and HMIE

·         Promoting contact between the school, parents, pupils and the local community

·         Involvement in the appointment of senior school staff

·         Fundraising

As parents/carers you are automatically members of the Parent Forum and as such have the right to apply to join the Parent Council.

What skills do I need to have if I want to be on the Parent Council?

No specific skills are needed to be on the Parent Council. All that is required is an interest in the success of Rosshall Academy and a willingness to devote a little time and effort to achieving this.

What do I need to do if I am a member?

Some parents will take up more formal positions within the PC such as Chairman, Treasurer or Secretary. The other members will contribute to discussion and sometimes take responsibility (individually or as part of a group) for other tasks, e.g. organising fundraising.

When does the Parent Council meet?

The parent council has monthly, evening meetings during term time which will normally last for a couple of hours.  On occasion, there may be additional meetings planned to consider specific issues more fully. In addition, some members may choose to attend evening seminars organised through Glasgow City Council or some other external body.

Meetings of the Parent Forum

In addition to the Parent Council meetings, there are supplementary Parent Forum meetings which are open to members of the forum (i.e.  all parents or carers of children at Rosshall Academy).  This is an informal meeting which gives anyone who has issues or concerns the opportunity to raise them with the parents who sit upon the Parent Council (note: school staff and officials are not present at these meetings). These meetings normally take place in the evening, one week in advance of the monthly Parent Council meetings.

Relevant business for discussion

It should be noted that the Parent Council is not a forum where issues regarding individual children, parents or related concerns should be raised and discussed. There are appropriate channels through teachers, year heads and pastoral care for dealing with such matters.

The focus should always be on issues that pertain to the wider school community.

What if I am interested but not sure if I want to be a member?

Parents and carers may come along to the Parent Forum meetings at any time and have the opportunity to discuss membership and what is involved more fully.  Afterwards you can then decide whether to join us or not.  There is also a contact email address on this website.

For practical reasons, our constitution limits the number of parent members and also the proportion of parent members to staff and other members. If there were a number of parents or carers wishing to join the council, it may be necessary to restrict the applications.

Dates of meetings are shown on the AGM and Monthly Meetings section of this website.
