National 4

National 4 chemistry is studied over 1 year in S4. It is divided into 3 units:

  • Chemical Changes and Structure which contains topics on rates of reactions, atoms and bonding, energy changes and acids and bases.
  • Nature's Chemistry which contains topics on fuels, hydrocarbons and everyday consumer products
  • Chemistry in Society which contains topics on metals, plastics, fertilisers and nuclear chemistry.

At National 4, pupils will need to pass 3 unit assessments and the added value unit. Pupils will also be assessed using a written scientific report. All assessments will cover knowledge and understanding of chemistry as well as problem solving skills.

Pupils will also receive regular homework and revision throughout the year covering each topic.
