Park Mains Gas Leak

1300 sent home from school after leak

More than 1300 pupils were sent home today after a suspected gas leak closed their school. The alert began after staff arrived this morning and smelled gas in the vicinity of the PE block. Pupils were not allowed into the buildings and Scottish Gas engineers were called.

The problem appeared to involve a corroded external pipe outside the PE block and a specialist contractor was called in to resolve the problem. The scare at Park Mains High, Erskine, meant all pupils had to be sent home and officials said they did not know if the school would reopen tomorrow. But the gas problem is in an existing pipe and is unrelated to the construction work under way on the new £33million building, which is on an adjoining site.
